My Journey from Dietitian to Clinical Coordinator: A Reflection
As I sit back and reflect on my career journey with Vivir Healthcare over the past five years, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible opportunities and experiences that have shaped my professional growth in the Dietetics space within the allied healthcare industry. It all began in September 2019 when I landed my first role with Vivir Healthcare after graduating from university as a contractor Dietitian based in Melbourne. It was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Little did I know then that this is how my unique career journey would unfold.
In those early days, I gradually built my caseload, working up to 24 hours. I divided my time between residential aged care facilities and home care, where I connected with residents and clients, learning from their life stories and experiences. Each interaction was a chance to make a difference, however small, in their lives. I really enjoyed the variety in my workload and learning new skills in those service areas Vivir Healthcare delivers.
By December 2021, I was offered a part-time position — which I was grateful for. This stability allowed me to deepen my connections within the Vivir Healthcare clinical workforce, engage and connect with more wonderful clients across aged care facilities and home care, and further expand my skill set with Vivir’s evolving learning modules.
In early 2022, I was approached to cover a maternity leave role as a Clinical Supervisor for the Dietetics team. This new position expanded my responsibilities significantly. My hours doubled to 48 hours a fortnight, split between clinical caseload management, and providing clinical support and guidance to fellow dietitians. This role marked a pivotal moment in my career, where I not only honed my clinical skills but also took on leadership and management responsibilities which I really enjoyed.
The experience I gained during this maternity leave cover prepared me for my next career progression opportunity. In October 2023, I transitioned into the role of Clinical Coordinator for dietetics — a newly created position within Vivir Healthcare. In this role, I provide clinical support and direction to our dietetics team based all around Australia, and trained in aged care, home care, disability, and paediatrics, while also contributing to business development initiatives from a dietetic perspective to ensure we are providing the highest level of dietetics care to everyone we support. It's a role that allows me to blend my passion for patient care with strategic business insights.
What I cherish most about my role is the daily interaction with our wonderful and talented dietetics team. I thrive on fostering an environment where everyone's ideas are valued, and we work collaboratively to enhance our services and grow as a cohesive unit. The insights and reflections shared by my fellow Dietitians, as well as my Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, and Speech Pathologist colleges within the Vivir Healthcare business inspire me and continually push me to evolve both personally and professionally.
Absolutely one of the most rewarding aspects of my career is the relationships I've built with residents in aged care and clients in home care. These individuals have entrusted me with their health and well-being, and I consider it a privilege to advocate for them. Their life stories and shared wisdom enrich my work, reminding me of the profound impact us Dietitians can have in even the smallest ways.
Looking back, I realise how far I've come — from a newly graduated Dietitian to a Clinical Coordinator guiding a dedicated team towards clinical excellence. Vivir Healthcare has been instrumental in my growth as a Dietitian, offering me opportunities that have shaped me into the allied healthcare professional I am today. I am grateful for the trust they have placed in me and excited for what the future holds.
