The Importance of Occupational Therapy

Vivir Healthcare • October 29, 2018

One of the services that Vivir Healthcare provide is Occupational Therapy (OT). To celebrate the World Occupational Therapy Day (27th of October), we’ve shared a personal story from our own OT, Catherine Hu.

“In occupational therapy, occupations refer to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families and with communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life. Occupations include things people need to, want to and are expected to do."
- Catherine Hu, Occupational Therapist, Vivir Healthcare

Catherine visits homes all around Australia, making a difference to the lives of her elderly clients.

The story below highlights the small differences that can mean the world to someone.

Catherine’s client is Sarah who is an elderly lady living at home with her husband. She is experiencing an increase of fatigue and her mobility is deteriorating. She has been having trouble getting into the bath tub to access the shower. Removing the bath tub would mean Sarah’s husband would need to give up taking baths; a simple yet big joy in his life.

After an OT assessment, Sarah’s family realised there was no need to completely remove the bathtub.

Catherine’s solution and recommendation meant that Sarah could continue showering with the help of a hand rail and bath board. This allows Sarah to be independent and keep her husband happy too!

We work together to make sure that our clients are not giving up what they love. Growing older should not stop you from living your life to the fullest.
