Celebrating the abilities of people with a disability this IDPwD

Vivir Healthcare • November 22, 2023

Every year on the 3rd of December is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). Officially announced by the United Nations in 1992, IDPwD is a day observed all over the world as it aims to promote and showcase community awareness and acceptance of individuals with a disability, but most importantly celebrate their achievements. The 2023 theme for IDPwD, ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities’, calls on everyone to collaborate in creating a more equitable and just world for individuals with disabilities.

Disability in Australia

In Australia, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, more than 4 million people in Australia have a disability, with half of those with a disability being people who are 65 and over.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) currently supports more than 610,000 participants.

How we support Australians with disability

At Vivir Healthcare, we are acknowledging this special day not only to recognise and assist in closing the barrier and stigma of disability, but to also show our support as a registered NDIS provider for the provision of allied health services. The Allied Health services that we provide to NDIS participants aims to promote inclusion, as well as raise awareness about the challenges faced by person with disability.

Our Australia-wide team are made up of passionate, friendly, and talented Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Dietitians who collaborate with participants, families, and care workers / support coordinators to deliver the best possible outcomes to help the individual reach their goals. In most cases, our clinicians are available to conduct home visits and can also connect and provide tailored support via our telehealth services across dietetics, speech pathology, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

We work with participants of all abilities. Our patient-centred approach not only helps us deliver tailored support to individuals, but to provide the upmost individualised care so they can maintain their engagement and independence in all areas of daily living in their community.
